Visualizing your speech as an upside-down pyramid

Once you’ve relayed the general, overall area, field, arena, subject matter for better public speaking, you can then start to give some detail. Think of a movie camera starting out with a wide angle shot of a fabulous vista, then ever so slowly zooming in on a certain element of the scene, such as going from an expansive mountain landscape, across the meadow to the snow-capped mountain top, to a snowy treetop, to an empty and abandoned bird’s nest in one of the limbs.

Another way to visualize this narrowing of focus is by visualizing your speech an upside-down pyramid, or a triangle balancing on its tip. You start at the top, where the surface area is the widest, and as you proceed downward, you hone in on ever finer details.
