Irregularly Shaped Corneas
Astigmatism is caused by irregularly shaped corneas. A perfect cornea would exhibit a circular shape while an astigmatism afflicted cornea will be more oblong than circular. The distorted shape weakens the ability of the cornea to focus the light properly. The diffusion of light is what causes blurred vision. Lasik eye surgery is the most utilized procedure for astigmatism correction surgery. The eye surgeon will create an incision on the cornea to form the corneal flap. The flap will be moved out of the way while an ultraviolet laser is used to reform the cornea into a more circular shape. Once the laser has done its job, the corneal flap is replaced and the procedure ends.
