What is DSL And What Does It Stand For?
As you probably know DSL is a means of connecting your computer to the Internet at high speeds (much faster than a traditional dial-up connection). It stands for “Digital Subscriber Line” and works using your existing telephone line to transfer data. Apart from the speed there is one other huge benefit over dial-up, and that’s the ability to use your phone even when you are connected to the Internet. The reason this is possible is because your telephone line holds a large frequency range within it. Your normal phone conversations use only a small band of frequencies (the lower part). This means that the higher frequencies are holding no data at all and this is what DSL services take advantage of. Because it uses existing technology, the only extra hardware you need is a DSL modem, which is usually provided by whichever DSL service you decide to join at no extra cost.
